Well, many of those teachers begin their instructional planning by utilizing the talents, gifts and strengths students bring into the classroom. Or as I like to say,
Building on what they bring is the bridge for them to buy!
That is, when teachers plan and design lessons, center student-teacher and student-student interactions based on those attributes students come to class with, it creates a bridge for students to buy-into them and the ideas they have to present. Students will begin to buy-into you and your ideas when you recognize, appreciate and incorporate the rich elements they bring into the classroom.
Would you agree that, from time-to-time, it’s a battle to engage students with your content, style of delivery, or with you? Many would agree that it’s a constant battle against enemies of learning such as student apathy, disinterest, and boredom.
However, when you’re in a battle, the only way you can SUCCESSFULLY engage the enemy (i.e. boredom, apathy) is by first doing your homework. You’ve got to gather as much information about the enemy as possible. When you’ve done your homework, it helps you learn the rules of engagement!
