Do you think feedback has any value in the everyday life of the average person?
Personal life
I don't know about your personal life, but in mine feedback is, at times, most helpful and also has gotten me in a world of trouble! Ever have someone ask your opinion. "How do you like my new outfit?" or "Hon, do you notice anything different? , they ask you. You give your opinion and the person ends up upset with you.
Professional arena
Ever had a performance observation conducted by a supervisor and didn't receive feedback at all or takes days to receive it? You think everything went great but haven’t received word so you're on pins and needles because of the uncertainty of not knowing.
Corporate America uses feedback as a critical tool in quality assurance and to help grow the business. Think about every phone call you place to the customer service or technical support department. What question are you almost always asked at some point during the call? "Would you mind filling out a brief survey?". Feedback is the the mother’s milk of improvement in the corporate world. As a matter of fact, retailer JC Penney values it so much that they were offering 15% discount on next purchases.
The Power of Feedback in the Classroom
Feedback, when used effectively, is a powerful tool in the classroom for the following reasons:
a. Instruction becomes more rigorous
b. It is a research based effective practice
c. It improves the chances of enhancing academic achievement
d. It shows students you care and helps endear students to you when they see you put in work, they often want to perform.
